**The Light Grey Art Camp Itinerary may be subject to adjustments based on weather or other circumstances.
This October, Light Grey Art Lab heads to Southern Ireland for a fantastical journey through Ireland's oldest, historically rich, and serene landscapes! We will step back in time exploring some of Ireland's architectural gems including Kilkenny's gothic castle and Black Abbey, Viking ruins, cathedrals, abandoned structures and fairy forts dating back hundreds of years. We will spend out days hiking through the vast rolling hills of the Comeragh Mountains, boating to the Saltee Islands (a puffin and wildlife haven), and wandering through ivy-filled forests. We will learn about the night sky at the Blackrock Castle Observation Tower, go set dancing in Kilkenny, and tell ghost stories around the fire at our home in the Hook Peninsula. The trip also includes visits to historical cities of Kilkenny and Cork where will wander through the cobblestone streets, shops, and open-air markets exploring both the ancient relics as well as contemporary and traditional culture, local cuisine, live music and dancing.
Our six-day/five-night trip includes daily excursions, castle and special tour admission, creative workshops, and conversations amidst some of Ireland's most wild, sublime, and historically rich landscapes -- a land of fairytale, folklore, and Viking legend! We look forward to opening our sketchbooks, opening our minds, and setting off on a creative journey together.
We welcome people from all backgrounds to join us on our journey abroad! Light Grey Art Lab International trips are designed for creatives in mind, with chances to get up close to specimens, hear from experts in a variety of fields, information on the history, culture and mythology of the places we visit, and enjoy new friendships with like-minded people! As always, we would be happy to help assist interested participants in planning their arrivals and departures, and can recommend additional fun places to visit while you're in this neck of the woods. An informational registration packet will be sent to participants after confirming your spot on the adventure!
PROGRAM FILLED! Check back soon for more opportunities to travel in 2017!
The cost of the program does not include flights, as participants will be traveling from all parts of the world to join us. If you need help finding an affordable flight, feel free to contact us and we can help!

SUNDAY OCTOBER 1:
Artists rendezvous in the charming city of Kilkenny. Upon registration, all participants will be provided with all of the information needed to plan their arrival. Participants will receive detailed information for how best to join us at our rendezvous location and the Light Grey team is happy to help with any additional assistance needed to prepare for the trip.
Here, we will meet Light Grey team members Jenny Bookler and Lindsay Nohl at a local coffee shop who will introduce you to the program ahead. We will spend the afternoon wandering through Kilkenny’s cobblestone streets, tea shops, and Butterslip Alley, then peruse around the gardens of the old Black Abbey and tour the Kilkenny Castle. We gather together for an early dinner at the Kyteler’s Inn; this famous Inn was once the home of a notorious dame and witch in the 13th century! After a great meal and live music, we head to our Irish home base in heart of the Hook Peninsula, where we have time for sketching, storytelling, and a late-night bonfire on the tip of the peninsula.
MONDAY OCTOBER 2nd:
We'll begin the day exploring the Hook Peninsula, known for its ancient Viking relics and coastal ports, scenic views, abandoned castles, and ruins hidden deep within the forests. After a traditional breakfast at the house, we will walk down towards the Hook Lighthouse (the oldest operating lighthouse in the world) where we can grab a coffee and enjoy the serenity of the crashing waves, massive rocks, and tide pools.
We will spend the whole day adventuring around the peninsula and all of it’s incredible landmarks including the Tintern Abbey as we hike through its old, stonewalled cemeteries, mossy forests, and crumbling monastery covered in ivy! We will also visit Slade Castle (two of the most haunted castles in Ireland.) After a relaxing day in the sunny south, we head to dinner at one of the local pubs in Templetown.
THURSDAY OCTOBER 5th:
The beautiful Saltee Islands are located just off the port of Kilmore Quay. We will board a private ferry and boat over to the islands for a day full of hiking, sketching, and wandering along the cliffs! The islands (the Great and the Little Saltee) have been host to neolithic men, early Christian hermits, Vikings and Medieval monks through the years, but are currently private islands that are a wildlife sanctuary for thousands of puffins, gannets, gulls, seals, dolphins, and sea life! After our boat tour back to the mainland, we will grab fish and chips from a local cafe in Kilmore Quay and make our way back towards our home on the Hook Peninsula for night activities and Light Grey workshops!
FRIDAY OCTOBER 6th:
We will start our day off with a home cooked breakfast at the house. After packing our bags, we head back to the city of Kilkenny for a farewell coffee and conversations. After our goodbyes, artists are welcome to spend time in the city, check out the nearby museums, or hop a bus to Dublin or another connecting city. Ireland has a great bus system, making it easy to get to Dublin, Limerick, the Cliffs of Moher, and beyond. We would be happy to offer recommendations for artists who would like to continue their journey after the program!
TUESDAY OCTOBER 3rd:
With backpacks and sketchbooks in hand, we will explore the Comeragh Mountains and Mahon Falls. We will pack a picnic and set out on foot for an outdoor adventure along picturesque trails and mossy hillsides.
In the evening, we will head back to Kilkenny for dinner and Irish Set Dancing lessons at a traditional pub. Here, we'll test our new skills amongst the friendly locals, experts, and newcomers alike.
After dancing, we will head back to the house and enjoy some dessert, LGAL activities, and late-night board games.
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 4th:
This is a full day for experiencing the sites, smells, and tastes of the southern cities. We'll be visiting the port cities of Waterford and Cork, with it's many sails, small boats, merchant restaurants, colorful homes, and open-air markets. We will take a short, scenic drive down the coast towards the city of Waterford (the oldest city in Ireland founded by Vikings) and grab a coffee and pastry from the cafe-lined Hight Street before continuing to Cork
Next we'll visit the city of Cork, nominated as the "European Capital of Culture," filled with markets, shopping streets, as well as several well-known castles, cathedrals and museums. Here artists can opt in to visit the well-known Blarney Castle where they can kiss the legendary Blarney Stone and receive the "Gift of the Gab" -- and heighten their ability to flatter, sweeten by humor, and coax by magical means. Artists can spend the rest of the day wandering the streets or through some of these old structures on their own.
In the evening, we will meet for dinner before our special night tour at the Blackrock Castle and Observatory located right on the shoreline of Cork. We will have a guided experience of the castle architecture, dungeons, observation tower, and planetarium.
