Join us on an adventure to explore one of our nation's most extreme landscapes; the colorful plateaus of Yellowstone! We'll trek through a variety of strange and beautiful hydrothermal areas filled with mud pots, geysers and fumaroles, hike through lush forests filled with a wide variety of wildlife, and spend time searching for some of Yellowstone's tumbling waterfalls.
Our four-day / three-night all-inclusive journey will challenge creatives to explore, expand and express themselves amongst the dramatic backdrop of Yellowstone's many wonders as we explore, draw, and converse together.
• Visit to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center to learn about and draw the Wolves and Grizzlies
• Marvel at cascading Mesa Falls, a waterfall nestled on the edge of West Yellowstone
• Sketchbook Hikes to Firehole Canyon Drive, Mammoth Hot Springs, and several of the spouting Geyser basins.
• A chance to view Bison, Elk, Moose and Raptors in their element.
AND OF COURSE... Plenty of time for creative conversation, sketching the gorgeous surroundings, and tons of LGAL led activities!
OPTIONAL ADD-ON: GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK
If you are interested in extending your trip and joining us for "part 2" of our journey to Grand Teton National Park, we will be offering a program extension. CLICK HERE For more information on the Grand Teton Art Camp!
We'll pick up everyone at the Idaho Falls Airport and head directly to our cabin where we'll have lunch and a quick workshop together as we discuss the next several days! After lunch, we'll head over to beautiful Mesa Falls trail, a series of falls boasting higher vertical drops than Niagara Falls, where participants can sketch or take a small hike, keeping an eye out for the plentiful local birdlife.
"Explore the river, waterfalls, and forest for Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers, Red-naped Sapsucker, Cassin’s Vireo, and Western Tanager. In the canyon, look for Peregrine Falcon, Bald Eagle and Northern Pygmy-Owl." -- Idaho Birding
At night we'll make a big, family-style dinner alongside an outdoor fire, before an evening of creative conversations, drawing, and games.
We'll wake up early and head to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, where we'll meet with a ranger that will introduce us to some of the park's most incredible animals. We'll learn about the social, feeding, and territorial activities of the animals while we have a chance to sketch them in an intimate setting.
Then, we'll take a scenic drive over to Firehole Canyon Drive, where huge lava flows form the canyon walls. We'll see the winding Firehole River, Firehole Falls, and take a lunch break down by the Firehole Swimming Area.
In the afternoon, we'll head over to view the colorful Grand Prismatic Spring and skip down to Biscuit Basin, Black Sand Basin, and visit Old Faithful, with plenty of opportunity to explore and sketch. This area is notorious for it's primordial landscape and we'll take the opportunity to learn a bit about the geology forming the structures we see around us.
As the sun sets, we'll make our way back toward our cabin and get ready for an evening BBQ and game night!
An optional evening star-walk will be available for those that would like to view the night sky in our area and take in some fresh air or snap a few photos of the constellations above us.
After breakfast, we'll head north toward Mammoth Hot Springs area where we'll take in the wonders of a the huge walls of travertine structures created by the earth's powerful hydrothermal activity. This area is home to a variety of incredible trails with breathtaking views of the local scenery and we'll have a chance to wander and sketch at our leisure.
We'll gather for lunch and view the Boiling River nearby, where water temperatures rise to well over 113 degrees. In the spring, the river will be too high to swim in, but we'll take this opportunity to warm up alongside the steamy banks!
In the afternoon, we'll go on a hike in the area and get a chance to view the wildlife. This will be a great chance for artists to view many Yellowstone animal babies!
We'll watch the sun set over the nearby mountains and finish our last minute plein air paintings or photos and head back to the cabin for a family-style meal and optional night-time activities, a dip in the hot-tub, or a chance to relax on our last night together.
After a family style breakfast and one final morning get-together we'll gather our things and head toward Idaho Falls. Participants can choose to spend the afternoon in town and grab a bite to eat and explore the shops in this cute little town, or head on toward the airport to catch their flight home.
Those participants staying on for the "Part 2" Grand Teton Art Camp (CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO), will travel on toward Driggs Idaho, where we'll help them check in to their cabin for the evening! Driggs is another cute little town with places to explore and great options for local cuisine! Participants will have the afternoon and evening to explore on their own. (Lunch and Dinner will not be included that evening for participants that wish to stay for both sessions, but there will be plenty of variety to choose from for people that wish to sample the local culture.) We will be picking up participating artists again the following morning to continue the adventure in the wild Grand Teton National Park!
