PROGRAM: Central Costa Rica
* We pride ourselves on finding the most incredible spots off the beaten path and have searched far and wide to locate spaces that are beyond the standard tourist guides! Earlier this year we embarked on a quest to build a program that counteracted many of the stressors that plague the creative industry: burnout, lack of inspiration, physical aches and pains, and fatigue. After much consideration, we’ve curated the perfect blend of relaxing, invigorating, and creatively renewing activities and spaces for individuals looking for the perfect creative cleanse for body, mind, and creative spirit. Join us in taking a closer look at the world around us, connecting with nature and the senses, and nourishing ourselves via a series of creative wellness workshops, activities, and more.
Our 7 day / 6 night journey will challenge creatives to explore, expand, and express themselves amongst the local Costa Rican culture, lush natural landscape, and serene exploratory adventures.
• Experience the incredible serenity of the rainforest via a variety of creative observational hikes
• Spot and identify tropical birds and their calls via a dawn birdwatching breakfast
• Enjoy and learn how to cook some of Costa Rica’s signature dishes with ingredients from the local market
• Take a dip with the locals in the natural pools alongside the Arenal River
• Visit local artisans and learn about the traditional art and craft of the indigenous Maleku people

• Spend an evening of your choice in the hot river near Tabacon, or deep within the jungle on a nocturnal creature hike

LEADING UP TO THE JOURNEY:
Well before you leave the comfort of your home, the Light Grey staff will contact each person to coordinate arrival times and our rendezvous in Costa Rica. Each participant will receive all of the information they'll need to pack, prepare, and get excited about our journey, along with a welcome email introducing you to your teammates as soon as registration is confirmed.
We will be sending all of the necessary information for each participant to feel confident about traveling into Costa Rica, what can be expected, and how to coordinate with us at our rendezvous location in La Fortuna!
***Notice! Traveling before / after the journey!
If you are interested in continuing the adventure after your time with us, we recommend adding days AFTER your trip with Light Grey Art Lab, if possible! That way, you’ll be familiar with spaces we’re visiting and can adjust accordingly!
Please note that we take into consideration weather, seasonality of the program, and anything else that may disrupt enjoyment of the highlights during the trip and will adjust our schedule where needed in order to provide the best experience to all travelers!
OUR COSTA RICA ART CAMP PROGRAMS INCORPORATE A VARIETY OF SITE VISITS, CREATIVE PROGRAMMING, LIGHT GREY ART LAB STAFF-LED WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES, AND A HEALTHY DOSE OF SPONTANEITY.
Costa Rica’s unique landscape allows us to make the most out of the nooks and crannies of the spaces we visit. We make a point to create programing that is not only unique to each visit, but exceptionally varied. Our site visits will include a wide variety of ecologically specific spaces, wide-open vistas, secluded areas off the beaten path, and visits to areas of local beauty, shops, and areas of past and current cultural significance. As each session is unique, we do not provide a detailed day-by-day itinerary for our program, however; we do guarantee plenty of wild spaces, waterfalls, sketch-hikes through epic spaces, and tons of time to create work, learn, and explore with a group of incredible creatives.
The Light Grey Art Lab team is celebrating our 6th year of Art Camp programming around the world, and we’ve created this ART CAMP itinerary to reflect a new set of priorities, such as more time out in the field creating, more great context for the historical, cultural, and natural significance of the spaces we visit, creative challenges and workshops, and more fun surprises than ever.
The Light Grey Art Lab staff will be curating this special program based on a variety of environmental factors, weather, and accessibility. Participants interested in having a thorough adventure should apply!

This program includes all breakfasts, and two family-style dinners in the countryside as part of the cooking workshops. Light Grey Art Camp International trips allow for visitors to experience a wide range of local cuisine per their own tastes. We will be out traveling every day, and will be in populated locations that ofter several options for all other meals. A wonderful way to experience Costa Rican cuisine and culture is to enjoy meals from the local sodas (local family owned restaurants), the markets, and via recipes local to the area, so we will be visiting many different hand-picked locations on our journey. We will do our best to help find establishments that can accommodate participants dietary restrictions, but be aware the Costa Rican diet may vary from your usual fare, so please let us know if you have any allergies and we can try our best to assist all participants with dietary needs as best we can.
This is a moderate activity level trip that includes a lot of time spent on foot. We will be walking a great deal, in both villages and mountains. Participants should be ready to explore on foot and a spend a large amount of time outdoors. The average temperature in Costa Rica in January is between 70 - 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and cooler weather in the evening is common, and because we are in the rainforest where it can be humid or rainy at times, quick-dry, breathable clothing is suggested. We always plan for all types of weather, and will provide a full packing list with resources to participants in advance of the trip to assist each artist in planning their journey!
