‘Fortune favors the bold’ is a familiar saying, originally translated from the Latin phrase ‘audaces fortuna iuvat.’ It can be interpreted as a rousing statement about one's ability to make their own luck, and ‘bold’ perfectly describes the aesthetic of Light Grey Art Lab’s newest exhibition, Fortune, which uses striking contrasts and luck-inspired imagery to usher in the new year with style. And with the new year looming ominously in the background brimming with unknowns, a little luck is always appreciated.
Fortune, which opens Friday, December 2nd, invites eighty artists from around the world to ring the new year with a bold statement; solid gold (foil). Drawing on themes of luck and fortune, participants were tasked with submitting artwork to be translated into metallic foil, resulting in dozens of unique, handmade, gilded pieces which will be on display through the end of the year.
The work in Fortune depicts imagery associated with luck, often derived from the artist’s own superstitions, adapted from various cultures, derived from works of literature, and riffs on well-worn idioms. These drawings will be presented rendered in a striking assortment of metallic foils stamped onto thick, matte, dark grey or jet black papers, creating a rich and lustrous exhibition.
In honor of the approaching new year, each piece from the Fortune exhibition will also be available in a calendar format. This will include the Fortune artwork mounted to a heavy, easily removable backer, foil stamped with the 2017 calendar.
The opening reception for Fortune is Friday, December 2nd from 7-10PM and will remain on display through January 13th. The opening reception is free and open to the public, and features artwork, music, and refreshments. A limited quantity of each print will be available at the opening, and any orders beyond that will be fulfilled before the holidays.
