OUR SOUTHERN JAPAN ART CAMP PROGRAMS INCORPORATE A VARIETY OF SITE VISITS, CREATIVE PROGRAMMING, LIGHT GREY ART LAB STAFF-LED WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES, AND A HEALTHY DOSE OF SPONTANEITY.
Japan’s unique landscape allows us to make the most out of the nooks and crannies of the spaces we visit. We make a point to create programing that is not only unique to each visit, but exceptionally varied. Our site visits will include a wide variety of natural spaces, hikes and walks through various types of terrain, visits to secluded areas off the beaten path, and stops in order to appreciate the local beauty, shops, and areas of past and current cultural significance. As each session is unique, we do not provide a detailed day-by-day itinerary for our program, however; we do guarantee plenty of wild spaces, waterfalls, sketch-hikes through epic spaces, and tons of time to create work, learn, and explore with a group of incredible creatives.
The Light Grey Art Lab team is celebrating our 3rd year of programming for the Southern Japan International Culture Tour and we’ve created this Art Camp itinerary to reflect a new set of priorities, such as more time out in the field creating, more great context for the historical, cultural, and natural significance of the spaces we visit, creative challenges and workshops, and more fun surprises than ever.
The Light Grey Art Lab staff will be curating this special program based on a variety of environmental factors, weather, and accessibility. Participants interested in having a thorough adventure should apply!

We will be out traveling every day, and will be in populated locations that ofter several options for most meals. We will do our best to help find establishments that can accommodate participants dietary restrictions, but be aware the Japanese diet varies a great deal from the West, and communicating can be difficult! We will try our best to assist all participants with dietary needs as best we can. Most meals are not included in the price of the program, but we do have some special surprises, sweets and snacks we will be providing during our journey! Meals are relatively inexpensive in Japan, with the street-food being some of the most affordable (and tasty!)
This is a moderate-to-high activity level trip that includes a lot of time spent on foot. We will be walking a great deal, in both cities and mountains, so participants should pack great, comfortable shoes and anticipate lots of movement as we navigate the cities and countryside. Even when taking public transportation, there is no guarantee to a seat, so we will kindly ask participants to keep this in mind when preparing for the journey. Participants should be ready to explore on foot and a spend a large amount of time outdoors. We expect all types of weather, and will provide a packing list to participants in advance of the trip.
