As part of our mission to connect creatives through out-of-this-world programming, we are thrilled to invite you to join us in Light Grey Art Camp International: Ireland Culture Tour.
This summer, we have prepared an incredible travel program that takes a small team of artists through the countryside of Ireland! We will step back in time exploring castles, abbeys, cathedrals, and structures dating back hundreds of years. We will explore both the ancient relics and old time traditions as well as the contemporary culture and cities of Ireland. We look forward opening our minds, opening our sketchbooks, and setting out on a creative journey together!

Meet Maike Plenzke. Maike is a freelance illustrator and comic artist from Berlin, Germany. Her work is colorful, narrative and filled with interesting characters and fantastical landscapes! Maike recently had her second comic book published by Glenat. We have had the privilege of working with Maike over several years in Light Grey Exhibitions, collaborative projects, and traveling in the Light Grey Iceland Residency 2014.
Meet Niky Motekallem. Niky is an illustrator currently residing in Minneapolis, MN. She is a MFA candidate at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, graduating this May. Her work is inspired by nature, mythology, symbolism, and decay - it is beautifully intricate! We have had the pleasure of featuring Niky's work in several exhibitions and connecting through through game nights, events, and visiting artist workshops.
Jesse was born in Colorado, lived in Minneapolis and New York, and currently residing in Vienna Austria. Jesse is a freelance illustrator, painter, graphic designer, and explorer. He has been an active participant in the pop surrealism world for many years showing in various galleries across the United States. He also recently illustrated his first book, Go to Hells. We have been collaborating, exhibiting, and traveling with Jesse for many years and are excited to invite him to the team!
Meet Sarah, a animator and comic artist living in the UK. Sarah has worked for many animation studies including Paramount Pictures, Disney, and Lupus Films. She is now happily working on new projects, freelance animation, and digging into polar explorers' travel diaries and sketching! We first met up with Sarah in Los Angeles in 2012, and are very excited to finally have the opportunity to travel together!
Meet Manuel Kilger. Manuel is a freelancer illustrator for clients such as advertising agencies, magazines, game companies, and more - you can find his colorful illustrations in publications, features, and exhibitions around the globe. Manuel's work is charming, colorful, and fun filled with unique animals and characters. We have had the honor of working with Manuel for the past several years and was able to travel with him on the Light Grey Iceland Residency 2014!
San Francisco, CA
Meet Yoshi Yoshitani, a concept artist and illustrator based out of San Francisco. Yoshi's work is filled with bright colors, patterns, imagery from various cultures. Yoshi has worked as a concept artist at Disney Interactive, Callaway Digital Arts, and several other studios. We have had the opportunity to work with Yoshi on a couple Light Grey Art Lab exhibitions, including the recent COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck. It is always a pleasure, and we look forward to traveling together to Ireland!

Meet Philippe, a 2D - 3D artist living in Montreal and working at Playtika. You can find some of Philippe's epic backgrounds and artwork in video games, animations, illustrations, and self-initiated projects! We have had the honor of working with Philippe in a number of exhibitions and collaborative projects, and we are always floored by his images. We are excited to welcome him to the team!
Romain is a freelance illustrator living in France. We have worked with Romain in several past projects including Girls: Fact + Fiction, Skate or Die, and many more! You can find Romain's work in published children's books, magazines, and galleries. His work is filled with lovely characters, children, and big-bearded viking men!

Nice to meet you! I have a background in fine arts and arts management, and a passion for collaboration, travel, and teaching! Since 2012, I have been working with Light Grey Art Lab to coordinate monthly exhibitions, visiting artist workshops, publications, gallery events, the Light Grey Residency Program and the Light Grey Art Camp Programming. The past several years, we have led artists to New York, Iceland, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and held meet-ups in New York, Portland, Los Angeles, and more. Ireland is near and dear to my heart - I lived in West Ireland for 5 months, traveling through the countryside, taking set dancing lessons, sketching castles, and falling in love with the culture, music, and charming people of Ireland. I look forward to sharing some of the most spectacular and sublime places with you- thank you for joining us!
**Our Light Grey Art Camp programming does include physical activity. We will be out in the field - hiking, climbing, and walking - for 4-5 hours per day. Participants should be prepared for moderate physical activity, bring proper attire and hiking shoes.
Wednesday, June 22nd
Arrangements will be made to pick up all participants from our meet-up location at the Dublin Airport. We'll caravan together through Dublin where we can grab a snack and get on the road to Southern Ireland!
Meet up location- Dublin Airport at 12pm at the Arrivals Meeting Point Terminal 1
Our journey will start as we head south through the Irish countryside - a scenic drive that passes many nature reserves, national parks, castles, vikings ruins, and traditional cottages. We will make our way to Kilkenny, where we will have a chance to visit Black Abbey, Kilkenny Castle, cathedrals and explore the town center. We will spend the afternoon sketching old houses and tasting local food in Butter Slip Alley!
We will then make our way to in Wexford, Ireland, where we have a rented a contemporary Irish house to serve as our home base for the next two days.
The house in nestled in a farming community near the Hook Peninsula, Black Castle, Magic Road, and several other beautiful locations! Artists will have time to sketch, explore, and get to know one another as we kick off the first night with creative workshops and board games!
Saturday, June 25th
We will spend the day adventuring through County Clare and the Burren! The Burren is a very unique landscape and contrast to the rolling hills of central Ireland, it is mountainous, rocky landscapes shaped by the last Ice Age, filled with ancient castles, ruins, fairy forts, and fields of moss and wildflowers!
We will start the day with a walk through Ballyvaughan and hit up the local farmers market for morning snacks. Throughout the day, we will have a chance to go to visit the Ailwee Caves & Bird's Of Prey, The Burren Perfumery and Tea Rooms, nearby ruins and cap off the evening at a local favorite, Monks Pub!
Monday, June 27th
This marks our final day of the Light Grey Art Camp International to Ireland. After a week of adventuring, sightseeing, and artwork, we head to Galway for a farewell breakfast and coffee. Galway is a big town on the Western coast full of great shops, art galleries, and history. We will say our goodbyes and then you are welcome to explore the town of Galway at your leisure - take in some of the sites, attend a tour, visit the University, or boat our to the Aran Islands! You can take your time in the city and then hop the bus back to Dublin when you are ready! The bus takes approximately 2hr 30min and will bring you directly to the Dublin Airport. The Bus costs 18 euro and leaves every 30 minutes to an hour. You can find the schedule and buy your bus tickets here or here.
If you would like to extend your vacation or need recommendations of places to stay and things to do- feel free to send me a note! I would be happy to help coordinate with the other artists to see if anyone would like to travel together or split a hotel.

Thursday June 23rd:
We'll wake up early and head to breakfast the town of Wexford. Throughout our journey, we will be stopping at some of the traditional pubs and local eateries to try some of the local dishes as well as participate in the pub culture! Many pubs serve as restaurants, B&B, and a gathering place in the town for people of all ages. There is often live music, storytelling, and great company.
After breakfast and coffee, we will make our way to the Hook Peninsula. The Peninsula is know for housing some of the most recognizable structures, such as the Loftus (Haunted) Castle, the Hook Lighthouse, Tintern Abbey and several other fascinating places. We will spend the afternoon sketching and hiking around the shore. The Hook Peninsula is also known for Whale and Dolphin sightings!
After a long day of adventuring, we will settle into the house for art making, conservations, and nightly activities!
Friday, June 24th
Today, we have the opportunity to see some of the most picturesque and colorful landscapes as we head sweep across the bottom half of Ireland, touring through several towns, castles, and abbeys along the way!
We will stop for a quick breakfast in the town of Waterford and then continue on toward the city of Cork. As we enter the city, you will see the colorful houses lining the harbor, fishing and sailboats, pubs, and churches. We will spend spend some time in town enjoying the fun shops and eateries.
As we continue our journey, we will stop at the famous Blarney Castle, Blackrock Castle, and then on to the town of Limerick. This city has been named Ireland's National City of Culture, as it is filled with arts, theatre, music, and comedians, and writers. As you probably guessed, the 5verse poem Limerick, is named after this creative city.
We will eat dinner in Limerick and then head to our final destination, Fanore, Co Clare, Ireland, where we have booked three nights at a cozy cottage right along the Western Coast. From our house, you can look out to the Atlantic Ocean!
After a long day driving through Ireland and exploring the cities, we will sit have a chance to relax, look at the stars, and make work together.
Sunday, June 26th
Today, we will do a nice coastal drive as we follow the Western shore heading towards the town of Doolin. We will check out this tiny town, some of the wool and knit shops, and grab brunch.
Nearby, is the Cliffs of Moher. The cliffs are one of the most stunning locations in all of Ireland. We will spend some time enjoying the cliffs, walking the perimeter trail and sketching.
We have a couple more stops through the afternoon and evening, and will slowly make our way to Kilfenora. This town is know for its music, traditional Céilî dancing, and its Kilfenora Céili Band that has been playing traditional music for over 100 years!
In the evening, we will learn how to Irish Set Dance at the traditional pub! This is one of the most incredible and inspiring dances to be a part of! The pub welcomes locals, experts, and newcomers alike.
After a fun night of dancing, we will head back to the house for our farewell evening, artwork, board games, and packing.
