Join us on a creative adventure as we travel to Norway to wander by mountain-streams and swim in glassy lakes, gaze out upon the crystal-clear fjords and look for red deer through forests filled with birch and spruce. We’ll learn about the incredible local craftsmanship of the area, share walks through the boggy landscape, see more waterfalls than you can handle, and tell stories into the midnight sun of the creatures that are specific to Norway’s rich folklore.
PROGRAM: HARDANGER REGION
* We pride ourselves on finding the most incredible spots off the beaten path. Like our NORWAY RESIDENCY PROGRAM, we have searched far and wide to locate spaces that are beyond the tourist guides! We have had the pleasure of hosting programs in the Hardanger region of the country — an area rich in cultural craft, art, and traditional techniques kept alive by the locals.
Our five-day / six-night journey will challenge creatives to explore, expand, and express themselves amongst the local Norwegian culture, epic natural landscape, and creativity-packed adventures.
• Learn about plants, wildflowers, and trees of Norway and their medicinal and traditional importance
• Get up-close and personal with a variety of raging mountain waterfalls
• Enjoy home-made Norwegian Vaffler (waffles)
• Sketch-hike through the boggy landscape and get to know the rich ecosystems
• Learn about and try the different Norwegian Crafts, such as Rosemaling, Knitting, and Woodcraft
• Take a refreshing dip in the waters of the Hardangerfjord with a view of the Folgefonna Glacier
• Stay in a traditional Norwegian cabin in the woods with access to backyard hikes
• Visit local art and craft museums and learn about the history of the area
• Wander through the trails and create your own sketch field-guide
• Enjoy the colors of the midnight sun
• Learn the historical importance of the area in WWII
• Learn about Norway’s fascination with trolls and hear some of the stories of the area
• And get inspired by the incredible beauty of the mountain landscape via plenty of hikes, walks, and wanders
AND OF COURSE... Plenty of time for creative conversation, sketching the gorgeous surroundings, and tons of LGAL led activities!

LEADING UP TO THE JOURNEY:
Well before you leave the comfort of your home, the Light Grey staff will contact each person to coordinate arrival times and our rendezvous in Iceland. Each participant will receive all of the information they'll need to pack, prepare, and get excited about our journey, along with a welcome email introducing you to your teammates.
***Notice! Traveling before / after the journey!
If you are interested in continuing the adventure after your time with us, we recommend adding days AFTER your trip with Light Grey Art Lab, if possible! That way, you’ll be familiar with spaces we’re visiting and can adjust accordingly!
Please note that we take into consideration weather, seasonality of the program, and anything else that may disrupt enjoyment of the highlights during the trip and will adjust our schedule where needed in order to provide the best experience to all travelers!
OUR NORWAY ART CAMP PROGRAMS INCORPORATE A VARIETY OF SITE VISITS, CREATIVE PROGRAMMING, LIGHT GREY ART LAB STAFF-LED WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES, AND A HEALTHY DOSE OF SPONTANEITY.
Norway’s unique landscape allows us to make the most out of the nooks and crannies of the spaces we visit. We make a point to create programing that is not only unique to each visit, but exceptionally varied. Our site visits will include a wide variety of ecologically specific spaces, wide-open vistas, secluded areas with very special significance, and visits to the local museums, shops, and areas of past and current cultural significance. As each session is unique, we do not provide a detailed day-by-day itinerary for our program, however; we do guarantee plenty of wild spaces, waterfalls, sketch-hikes through epic spaces, and tons of time to create work, learn, and explore with a group of incredible creatives.
The Light Grey Art Lab team is celebrating our 3rd year of programming in Norway, and we’ve created the ART CAMP itinerary to reflect a new set of priorities, such as more time out in the field creating, more great context for the historical, cultural, and natural significance of the spaces we visit, creative challenges and workshops, and more fun surprises than ever.
The Light Grey Art Lab staff will be curating this special program based on a variety of environmental factors, weather, and accessibility. Participants interested in having a thorough adventure should apply!
